3 Common Author Website Mistakes

3commonmistakesblogHello, all. Sierra here. As I was browsing a few author websites from the #PitchWars twitter feed the other day, I found myself growing frustrated. You see, I wasn’t finding what I needed from author websites. Then I realized: what seemed obvious to me to include might not seem obvious to others. Here are a few gotchas on websites.

By the way, these are things I would always address with a client when we do a site. I will always guide you to the best end goal: making it easy for site visitors to read you. 

Mistake #1: Unreadable text color.

It is so, so difficult to read text that is colored gray on a white background. It’s like the 2015 trend, whereas the early 2000s (and before, actually) trend was to have white text on a black background. Both issues amount to the same thing: people want their site to look cool and modern. Both are horrible. It is so difficult to read grey on white because there isn’t enough contrast.

Mistake #2: Making it difficult to see who you are.

I’ve complained about this before, but when you’re selling books, or preparing to sell books, or hoping to one day sell books in the future, you’ve got to get your name out here. And it’s FREE on your website to put your name there! I can’t tell you how many big author blogs I’ve come across who don’t do this. These are people with big blog followings, who blog frequently, and are represented by an agent.

And I don’t have a clue who they are.

Oh, I know. You don’t feel comfortable putting your name out there in big, bold letters. I get it. So many clients have confessed this to me. But, sorry. You’ve got to!

Mistake #3: Failing to say who represents you.

Listen, if you have an agent, mention it. And do it in one or both of two places: your About page and your Contact page. You don’t know who’s looking at your website and for what purpose, but trust me when I say that if you have agent, you need to say so. There are other writers investigating your agent who might want to see how and who you are as part of the process of getting that agent. There are editors and publishers who want to publish your book who will check your website and then need to contact you through your agent. There are writers who will follow up simply based on the fact that you have an agent, and you want to inspire them. Put it!

I found a website today of a writer who has an an agent, mentioned that she has one, told her story of having one, and then didn’t mention who anywhere.

These are all easy fixes!
